THE BEARS

The best place to find healthy bears is on the ice. That's where they hunt for seal, that's where they're most alert and well fed. The pair in the above photo are mother and two-year old cub. The rest are solitary. We found 6 bears in a 10-mile stretch of ice field. They couldn't see each other, there was just enough buffer between them.
Despite the abundance of ice and seals north of Svalbard these bears are a bit lean. It's not alarming, it's just part of the cycle between ice seasons. They'll start fattening up in the coming months.
