A BRIEF ICE GLOSSARY

bergy bits ~ icebergs rising less than 5m above the surface of the sea.
fast ice ~ solid pack ice.
frazil ~ needle-shaped ice crystals which form a slush in the sea.
growler ~ a small iceberg floating just on the surface which is difficult to see, thereby causing a hazard for ships.
nilas ~ thin crust of sea ice that moves up and down with wave action but doesn't break.
pack ice ~ floating ice formed by frozen sea water, which often creates an impenetrable barrier to navigation.
